ENT departments across Ireland continue to adapt to growing patient demand, evolving clinical pathways and increasing expectations around efficiency and patient experience.

As services develop, many departments are taking the opportunity to review the tools and technologies that support everyday clinical practice. While discussions often focus on equipment and infrastructure, instrumentation remains a key component of delivering safe, effective and efficient care.

Today’s ENT teams have access to a wider range of instrument options than ever before. Depending on the procedure, department workflow and clinician preference, solutions may include reusable instruments, single-use devices or a combination of both.

The most important consideration is ensuring clinicians have access to instruments that support the procedure being performed and allow them to focus on patient care.

From outpatient examinations and foreign body removal through to biopsy procedures, rhinology, otology and endoscopic interventions, modern ENT practice requires a broad range of specialist solutions. Instrument selection is often influenced by factors such as procedure volume, workflow, availability, infection prevention policies and clinician preference.

As a supplier to ENT departments across Ireland, we recognise that there is no single solution that suits every department or every procedure. Instead, we believe in working with clinicians and procurement teams to understand their specific requirements and identify the products that best support their objectives.

That is why we offer a complimentary ENT Clinical & Operational Review. The review provides an opportunity to discuss current practice, evaluate instrument usage and explore opportunities to support efficiency, consistency and patient care across the department.

The conversation is not about replacing existing practice. It is about understanding how ENT services operate today and identifying where additional products, technologies or procedural solutions may help support clinical teams.

Our goal is simple: to be a trusted partner for ENT departments across Ireland by providing access to specialist products, clinical expertise and practical support that helps clinicians deliver the highest standards of patient care.

If your department would like to arrange a complimentary ENT Clinical & Operational Review, we would be delighted to speak with you.

The Institute of Eye Surgery has strengthened its commitment to delivering advanced, evidence-based myopia management through the installation of the Heidelberg Engineering ANTERION, supplied and supported by HSL.

As myopia rates continue to rise worldwide, particularly among children, the need for accurate diagnosis, monitoring and evidence-based intervention continues to grow. At IOES, the dedicated Myopia Management Clinic sits within a wider specialist-led, research-active model of eye care, designed to support children and families from early assessment through to long-term monitoring and ongoing management.

By investing in advanced ocular imaging and biometry technology, the Institute of Eye Surgery is supporting clinicians with the tools needed for precise and personalised treatment planning, while giving patients and families clearer information and reassurance throughout their child’s care.

When developing its dedicated myopia management service, the Institute of Eye Surgery sought technology capable of meeting both the clinical precision and long-term monitoring requirements of modern myopia care.

Reliable corneal topography for orthokeratology lens fitting and accurate axial length measurement for monitoring myopia progression were key requirements. Following a careful evaluation process, the clinic selected the Heidelberg ANTERION due to its combination of high-resolution imaging, measurement consistency and workflow efficiency. The ANTERION enables clinicians to make confident, data-driven decisions while supporting a personalised approach to patient care.

Its advanced imaging capabilities align closely with the clinic’s philosophy of combining evidence-based treatment strategies with advanced diagnostic technology. The clinic also forms part of IOES’s complete specialist eye care model, with access to wider diagnostic, optometric, ophthalmology and subspecialist expertise where required.

Since introducing the ANTERION, the clinic has already experienced improvements in both clinical workflow and the patient journey.

The system provides highly accurate corneal topography, supporting more precise orthokeratology lens fitting, while its axial length measurement capabilities allow clinicians to closely monitor myopia progression over time. In addition, the intuitive design and streamlined operation have helped improve efficiency for clinical staff, allowing appointments to run more smoothly and effectively.

For patients and families, the benefits extend beyond the clinical data itself. The detailed imaging and measurements generated by the ANTERION make it easier for clinicians to explain findings and treatment plans, helping parents better understand what is being monitored at each visit, why it matters and the importance of ongoing monitoring and management.

Growing Interest in Advanced Myopia Care

Since introducing the enhanced myopia management service, the Institute of Eye Surgery has seen strong interest from community optometrists and other healthcare professionals, particularly in the advanced diagnostic capabilities and the enhanced level of myopia management the service can provide.

The service is designed to work collaboratively with local optometrists, supporting rather than replacing ongoing patient care. By providing access to advanced axial length measurement, corneal topography and specialist myopia management pathways, IOES can support referring practitioners with additional clinical insight where children require closer monitoring or more tailored intervention.

As awareness of myopia-related eye health risks continues to grow, structured monitoring and evidence-based intervention are becoming increasingly important parts of proactive eye care.

Myopia management is becoming increasingly important in optometric care due to the rising prevalence of myopia worldwide. While many people associate myopia simply with the need for glasses or contact lenses, progressive myopia is linked to a higher risk of serious eye conditions later in life, including retinal detachment, myopic maculopathy, glaucoma and cataracts.

As a result, modern optometry is increasingly focused not only on correcting vision, but also on slowing myopia progression through evidence-based interventions. Early detection, proactive treatment and ongoing monitoring, including regular axial length measurement, play a critical role in protecting long-term eye health and improving visual outcomes for children.

Positive Feedback from Patients and Families

Early feedback from patients and parents has been very positive so far. Parents have particularly valued the ability to see detailed images and objective measurements during consultations.

The visual nature of the ANTERION’s imaging helps families better understand what clinicians are monitoring at each visit and why treatment decisions are being made. This enhanced communication has helped build confidence in the treatment process and strengthened engagement with long-term myopia management plans.

The Institute of Eye Surgery plans to continue growing and developing its myopia management service, supporting more children through evidence-based treatment pathways and helping to reduce the long-term impact of progressive myopia.

With advanced technology from Heidelberg Engineering and support from HSL, alongside IOES’s connected specialist care model, the clinic will continue to develop as a trusted centre for myopia management in Ireland, delivering lasting benefits for children’s vision, eye health and quality of life.

Clinician Perspective

“Modern myopia management is about far more than simply correcting vision, it is about protecting children’s long-term eye health and quality of life. By investing in advanced technology such as ANTERION, we are able to provide highly precise, evidence-based care while giving parents a clear understanding of what we are monitoring at each visit, why it matters, and what we are aiming to achieve with treatment. Our goal is to continue growing the clinic and become Ireland’s most trusted centre for myopia management.”

At a glance, most displays look the same.

Put a high-end consumer monitor next to a medical display and you might struggle to tell them apart. The image looks sharp, the brightness is good, and everything appears clear enough.

But in healthcare, “clear enough” isn’t the standard.

Clinicians aren’t just looking at images, they’re interpreting them. And that means every detail, every shade, and every variation in contrast has to be accurate, consistent, and reliable over time.

That’s where the difference really begins.

A consumer display is designed for everyday use, streaming, browsing, general productivity. It’s built to look good in the moment, often prioritising vibrant colours and visual appeal. But it isn’t designed to maintain that performance in a controlled, measurable way, and it isn’t calibrated for clinical accuracy.

Medical displays are.

They’re engineered specifically for environments where image quality directly impacts decision-making. One of the key reasons for this is adherence to the DICOM standard, which ensures that grayscale images, like X-rays or CT scans are displayed with the correct luminance and contrast. That consistency is critical. Subtle differences in tone can reveal important findings, and if those differences aren’t rendered properly, they can easily be missed.

It’s not just about calibration at the start, either. Over time, consumer displays naturally drift. Brightness drops, contrast shifts, and uniformity across the screen can degrade, often so gradually that it goes unnoticed. In a clinical setting, that kind of variability introduces risk.

Medical displays are designed to avoid that. They maintain stable brightness and uniformity throughout their lifespan, often using built-in sensors and automated quality assurance tools to continuously monitor and adjust performance. The goal is simple: what you see today should be just as reliable tomorrow.

And then there’s the detail.

Resolution is only part of the story. Medical-grade displays are optimised to reduce noise and enhance contrast in ways that make fine details easier to detect. In fields like radiology, that can make a meaningful difference. It’s not about making images look better, it’s about making them more useful.

All of this contributes to something less tangible, but just as important: confidence.

When clinicians trust what they’re seeing, they can make decisions more quickly and with greater certainty. There’s less need for second-guessing, fewer repeat scans, and a smoother workflow overall. It’s a quieter benefit, but one that has a real impact on both efficiency and patient care.

Of course, consumer displays are often seen as the more cost-effective option. And upfront, they usually are. But over time, the picture changes. Shorter lifespans, lack of calibration, and the potential for inconsistent image quality can all add up, not just in terms of cost, but in risk and operational inefficiency.

Medical displays are built with that long-term view in mind.

That’s why solutions from Barco focus not just on image quality, but on maintaining it consistently, reliably, and in line with clinical standards.

Because in healthcare, the question isn’t whether an image looks good.

It’s whether it can be trusted.

And that’s a very different standard altogether.

Medical imaging plays a critical role in modern healthcare, helping clinicians diagnose conditions quickly and accurately. However, with growing demand for imaging services, increasing scan volumes and ongoing workforce pressures, healthcare organisations are constantly looking for ways to maintain timely access to expert radiology reporting. One solution that has become an essential part of healthcare delivery is teleradiology.

Teleradiology allows medical images such as X-rays, CT scans, MRI scans and ultrasound examinations to be securely transmitted from one location to another, enabling radiologists to review and report on studies remotely. Rather than being tied to a hospital reporting room, radiologists can access high-quality diagnostic images from a secure home reporting workstation or another approved location while maintaining the same clinical standards expected within a healthcare facility. The adoption of digital imaging technologies, PACS systems and secure network infrastructure has made remote reporting more accessible than ever. Today, teleradiology is used by hospitals and healthcare providers worldwide to support out-of-hours reporting, reduce reporting backlogs, provide access to specialist expertise and improve patient pathways through faster diagnosis.

Why Teleradiology Matters

As imaging demand continues to rise, radiology departments face increasing pressure to deliver accurate reports within shorter timeframes. At the same time, many healthcare organisations are experiencing radiologist shortages, making it difficult to maintain reporting capacity across all hours of the day. Teleradiology helps address these challenges by providing greater flexibility and access to reporting expertise. By enabling radiologists to work remotely, healthcare providers can extend reporting capacity, improve turnaround times and ensure continuity of service during periods of high demand or limited staffing.

The benefits extend beyond operational efficiency. Faster reporting supports quicker clinical decision-making, helping patients access treatment sooner. Teleradiology also enables healthcare organisations to access subspecialist expertise when required, ensuring complex cases receive the appropriate level of clinical review regardless of geographic location. However, successful teleradiology relies on more than simply transmitting images. Diagnostic accuracy depends on creating a reporting environment that mirrors the quality and performance of a hospital-based workstation. High-resolution diagnostic displays, accurate calibration, reliable connectivity and appropriate ergonomic design all play an important role in ensuring radiologists can report with confidence and precision.

How HSL Supports Remote Reporting

At HSL, we understand that effective teleradiology is built on a combination of technology, quality assurance and ongoing support. With decades of experience supporting healthcare organisations across the Uk and Ireland, we work closely with hospitals, healthcare providers and clinicians to deliver complete home reporting solutions tailored to their specific requirements. Our expertise includes the supply and installation of diagnostic-grade displays designed specifically for medical imaging. These solutions provide the image quality, consistency and reliability required for accurate reporting across a range of imaging modalities. We also support organisations with display calibration and quality assurance programmes, helping ensure reporting environments continue to meet clinical standards over time.

Beyond the technology itself, HSL provides end-to-end support, from initial consultation and workstation design through to installation, maintenance and ongoing technical assistance. We recognise that every reporting environment is different, which is why our solutions are designed around both clinical requirements and the practical needs of the individual user. As healthcare continues to evolve, teleradiology will remain a key component of delivering efficient, responsive and patient-centred diagnostic services. By helping healthcare organisations create high-quality remote reporting environments, HSL enables radiologists to work effectively wherever they are based, supporting faster diagnoses, improved workflows and better patient outcomes.

If you are exploring home reporting solutions, upgrading existing workstations or looking to strengthen your teleradiology capabilities, HSL can provide the expertise, technology and support needed to help you succeed.
