The Trust needed a variety of mobile point-of-care workstations to bring this technology into a wide range of care areas, especially as staff were adopting more electronic processes and workstreams. As members of the Confidentiality Advisory Group, SETRUST was well-versed in best practices for this project and knew that multiple styles of mobile carts, including ones that supported dual monitors, would be important for viewing detailed patient data and imagery within the new EPR system.

Working with Hospital Services Limited, a highly engaged and customer-focused reseller, SETRUST looked to Ergotron’s broad portfolio and selected the StyleView Laptop Cart and StyleView Cart with LCD Pivot. As former Ergotron customers, they knew about Ergotron’s reputation for quality and ability to meet unique needs across sites and departments.

SETRUST implemented the versatile carts across all clinical areas at multiple locations, including the emergency department, theatres, medical and surgical wards, higher dependency units and intensive care units.

The dual screens facilitate quick and easy access to all the relevant clinical information I need on a ward round,” said Chief Clinical Information Officer David Wilson about the SV Dual Monitor Kit accessory on the carts. “The mobile workstations are reliable and have excellent battery life, allowing me to focus on the patient rather than the technology. Overall, they have improved the quality of my daily ward rounds since their introduction.”

Other SETRUST sites appreciate the ability to accommodate an all-in-one computer. When several people need to view the same information at once, a large monitor on a mobile cart is critical. Many locations also use Ergotron monitor arms for comfortable typing and screensharing with patients in clinics and exam rooms.

Together, these professional-grade workstations are helping facilitate a new era of digital healthcare across the organisation.

Context

One of the hallmark features of the new health hub is the introduction of the DEXA Scanning & X-ray Service, marking a regional first for Newry. Dexa, a bone density scanner, plays a pivotal role in identifying and assessing the risk of osteoporosis, thereby enabling early intervention to prevent fractures. This service is particularly pertinent for demographics such as smokers, individuals over 50 years old, and postmenopausal women, where osteoporosis risk is heightened.

Challenge

Finding a single supplier who could provide both the DEXA and floor-mounted X-Ray systems for the trust, made more difficult by the constraint of converting an existing building, which imposed limitations on the size of the equipment. It was crucial for the equipment to fit within the available space and still be fully functional after installation.

The compact footprint of the Radspeed fit system proved to be highly advantageous. Its small size made it an ideal fit for the limited space available, overcoming the size constraint while ensuring that the trust’s imaging needs were met effectively.

Solution

HSL has introduced advanced diagnostic services, including Dexa Scanning for osteoporosis risk assessment and X-ray imaging, in the new healthcare facility in Newry City. The solution prioritizes patient education and engagement, empowering individuals to take proactive steps towards their health.

Context

The cark Clinic at Belfast Children’s Hospital is a paediatric cardiology unit that provides care for babies and children with congenital heart defects. since 2007 the clinic has been using video conferencing technology to monitor and support its patients at home, reducing the need for hospital visits and improving their quality of life. The video conferencing service, powered by HSL’s pulse platform, is now available to all of the NHS trusts across Northern Ireland, thanks to the collaboration between HSL, the e-health and core ICT service in the HSC Board, and the Children’s Heartbeat Trust.

Challenge

Several challenges such as long waiting lists, staff shortages, Covid-19 pandemic, and geographical barriers. These factors affected the quality and equity of care for the patients and their families, who often had to wait, travel long distances, or risk infection to access the services they needed. The trust needed a solution that could improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the health and social care system, and address the needs and preferences of the patients and their families.

Solution

The solution was to use videoconferencing technology to connect the Clark Clinic at Belfast Children’s Hospital with its patients and their families at home. The videoconferencing service, called Pulse, was developed by HSL, in collaboration with the e-Health and core ICT service in the HSC Board. Pulse allowed the clinic to monitor the health of babies and children with congenital heart defects, provide remote consultations and support, and reduce the need for hospital visits and admissions. The solution was especially helpful during the Covid-19 pandemic, when travel and contact were restricted and the risk of infection was high. The solution improved the quality of life and well-being of the patients and their families, as well as the efficiency and effectiveness of the health care providers.

Results

Dr Brian McCrossan, Paediatric Cardiologist at Clark Clinic said, “Since its introduction in 2007, there have been incremental improvements in the video conferencing technology. As the platform has advanced, it has significantly improved the timeliness and ease of connecting with patients and the paediatric cardiology team. It is extremely reliable and easy to access. We are also reassured by the security of the platform compared to social media type platforms. “Telehealth has played a vital role during the Coronavirus pandemic as it has enabled our team to conduct a number of urgent video-consultations for patients at home which have obviated the need for them to come to the emergency department. Parental anxiety has been more heightened than usual due to the pandemic, therefore we have found that supporting families at home with regular video-consultations has helped to reduce stress, reduce health service utilisation and is much appreciated by parents and clinicians alike.”

The aim of the project is to improve the collaboration and communication among the multi-disciplinary teams (MDTs) involved in orthopedic care across multiple hospital sites. The project is an example of how innovative technology can facilitate integrated care and enhance patient care.

Challenge

Before the video conferencing project was implemented, the trust faced several challenges in delivering effective and integrated orthopaedic care across multiple sites. Some of these challenges were:

The lack of face to face communication and collaboration among the MDTs, especially during the Covid 19 pandemic, which required remote working and social distancing.

The difficulty in accessing and sharing clinical data, EOR, imaging and test results in real time, which could affect the quality and timeliness of decision making and patient care.

Solution

The solution HSL’s video conferencing platform called Pulse, powered by Pexip, which integrates with Microsoft Teams and Cisco equipment. The platform allows the MDTs to share clinical data, access the electronic patient record (EPR), and view imaging and test results in real time, regardless of their location. The platform also enables the MDTs to benefit from the expertise of consultants from the regional centre of excellence for osteotomy in Basingstoke, leading to better outcomes for patients with complex orthopaedic cases. The platform is easy to use, secure, and flexible, and can accommodate meetings of various sizes and formats, as well as training and general meetings. The platform was implemented by HSL, in collaboration with the consultation and IT teams at HHFT. The platform has been successfully adopted by the hip, knee, and upper limb MDTs, and has improved the level of collaboration and communication among the MDTs across multiple sites.
