Hospital Services Limited (HSL) applies innovative approach to space issues within healthcare sector through launch of The Acoustic Pod Collection

Specialist distributor of medical and surgical equipment, consumable products, and healthcare IT solutions, Belfast, Dublin and Midlands-based Hospital Services Limited (HSL) has announced an innovative new project which applies the company’s long-standing expertise in forward-thinking healthcare solutions through the customisation and supply of purpose-built, sound-proof workstations which can be adapted to a wide range of requirements by healthcare professionals.

With the launch of their new Acoustic Pod Collection, HSL is enabling healthcare professionals to create usable and secure work and consultation spaces within their existing facilities to allow for better collaboration amongst medical professionals and aid remote consultations and diagnostics between patients and their doctors.

The units range in size from the one-person Solo and Single Privacy Pods to larger Connect dual-person pods and Engage meeting pods which facilitate up to four people per pod. The exterior of these fully customisable pods is designed with steel and glass, with intricately fabricated acoustic panelling, foam, and sound-seclusion sealing guaranteeing privacy for confidential discussions and teleconferences. The ‘room within a room’ dynamic is ideal for open-plan workspaces and features include but are not limited to adjustable lighting, ventilation system, frosted glass for brand placement or privacy, worktables, upholstered bench seating, power outlet, data plugs, USB charging and other computer connections. HSL’s suite of technology from its Telehealth division can also be utilised, allowing for effortless software and hardware collaboration. The team proudly applies their expertise in supplying mobile and portable technologies for Diagnostic and Telehealth applications, and clients are fully encouraged and supported in their decision to customise their pods.

Innovation is one of HSL’s core values and ensuring patient care is the company’s main priority, and this technological solution will help ensure safety, efficiency and accessibility for healthcare practitioners and Oliver McDaniel, Director of Sales at HSL, was at the forefront of the rise in demand for this solution during the Covid-19 pandemic. “The Acoustic Pod Collection was designed to address two core issues relating to open plan environments,” said Oliver. “The ergonomic and functional pods are packed with the latest technology and custom features to supply acoustic and visual privacy.”

He added, “Healthcare teams are looking to connect with clients virtually in aid of social-distancing. But also, spaces may be re-purposed to allow for more video consultations and meetings. These pods are an ideal solution. Popular examples of how these pods are being used can be found within Radiology where images can be reviewed remotely, or within healthcare teams who are virtually collaborating internally to discuss a patient’s follow-up.”

Since the launch of HSL’s Acoustic Pod Collection this month, the company has already seen significant interest from a number of health trusts across the UK and Ireland. “We are well positioned to deliver these innovative meeting and workspace requirements to our clients because of our in-depth understanding of their needs and approaches which has been developed over years of close working side-by-side with our clients. We look forward to continuing to roll out our Pods over the coming months as healthcare professionals explore new ways to work through remote and socially-distanced approaches,” Oliver added.

HSL is delighted to announce its partnership with Neat, the Norway-based developer of hardware aimed at making video conferencing simpler and improving the user experience. As an Advance Pro partner – and Neat’s only dedicated focused healthcare partner – HSL is engaging on a strategic level with the team at Neat to bring its innovative hardware solutions to the healthcare sector with the aim of improving video calls for clinicians and patients across the UK and Ireland.

HSL believes this new partnership will continue to boost confidence in telehealth solutions as Neat is passionate about bout blurring the lines between the physical and the virtual meeting, making video communications seamless and reliable. Hardware solutions offered by Neat are built in the ethos of “It just works,” meaning clinicians can trust tech to work as and when required, and set-up of devices is geared toward the same experience as setting up a consumer device, reducing the load for hospital IT teams.

In a recent Frost & Sullivan survey of global IT decision-makers, 93% of business leaders expect one-quarter or more of their employees to work from home moving forward, with hybrid work set to become the new normal. As many businesses want the option of deploying either Zoom or Microsoft Teams across their organisation, Neat has announced a collaboration with Microsoft to make their pioneering video devices available to Microsoft Teams customers worldwide beginning January 2022 to enable more and more people worldwide to enjoy the future-ready video technology Neat provides.

Neat’s complete portfolio of devices will be certified for Microsoft Teams and will run Teams and Microsoft Teams Rooms for Android, empowering Neat to further help drive innovation across meeting spaces to address today’s hybrid workplace needs and ensure Microsoft Teams customers will get to enjoy the best meeting experience imaginable.

“The quality and ease of use of the Neat systems, embedded with HSL’s services and support, essentially empowers healthcare providers to utilise conferencing and collaboration in many more ways for the benefit of the service, the clinicians and importantly improving access and outcomes for patients across a wide range of conditions and disciplines,”

says Dominic Walsh, CEO of HSL.

“Considering also the assured value for money that comes from HSL being able to supply these products and services through the NHS Medical IT Framework we have a unique value proposition to offer our customers.”

“I have worked with the team at HSL for many years now, and together we have always delivered innovation and value to all of our customers. We are committed to supporting HSL in their work within the healthcare sector across the United Kingdom and Ireland and through our combined capabilities we will help care providers to exploit these new ways of working for the benefit of all,”

added Wayne Mason, VP of Partners for Neat.

So far, telehealth solutions have been accepted very well by healthcare providers and patients during the ongoing pandemic. With restrictions constantly being reviewed due to the rise of Covid-19 cases, the need for reliable video conferencing services, systems and devices is constantly rising. HSL continues to empower customers to deliver integrated virtual health platforms which are expected to remain an increasingly important part of the health service beyond the pandemic.

“The partnership with Neat to bring this technology into everyday use across healthcare in the UK and Ireland and to integrate it with other medical, clinical and ICT applications already in use opens up a whole new suite of applications and opportunities for us that will enable HSL to continue to drive innovation and value for our customers,”

comments Sam McMaster, Head of Healthcare Technologies for HSL in Great Britain.

“The ability that is built into the Neat systems to work with a range of communications services such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams enables our customers to exploit these services in a broader way. In addition, the availability of these products and services when deployed properly will fundamentally change parts of healthcare spectrum such as clinical education, remote patient care, multi-disciplinary team meetings for various care programmes and clinical collaboration in areas such as radiology, pathology and reporting.”

Zoom Rooms – The Neat Way

The Neat Bar and Neat Pad are native Zoom devices which aim to do for conference rooms what Zoom did for video meetings. Working closely with Zoom, the team at Neat have developed the Neat Bar for simple set-up and launch. There is no PC required with the Neat Bar, meaning interruptions like required Windows or iOS updates or required reboots have been eliminated. With table stand options, wall mounting, or on-screen mounting, the Neat Bar is adaptable to various set-ups and is fully managed via the Zoom administration portal, with updates fed to the Neat Bar as Zoom releases updates.

A high quality 12MP camera and superior audio quality offer an outstanding user experience and clarity, creating a protective audio video bubble around each participant, whilst an ultra-sonic tweeter also enables reliable and seamless content sharing from other devices. With a range of proprietary technologies included within the Neat Bar, this one-device solution is improving the quality of calls for those within a conference room as well as those at the other end of the call.

Simplifying Video Call Formats with Neat Symmetry

Working to reduce the difficulties faced by video calls taking place in a conference room format, Neat’s auto framing technology, Neat Symmetry, works by identifying the individuals within a room and framing each individual in their own tile. This helps to centre the individuals on a call in their own frames, eliminating background noise and helping call participants in other spaces to feel more integrated into a group conversation. The framing technology is also capable of intuitively tracking individuals as they move around a space and picks up new individuals as they enter a room.

Enabling Healthy Workspaces with Neat Sense

With a focus on creating healthier, safer and more cost-effective workspaces and classrooms, Neat Sense also gives accurate, real-time room analytics of a workspace. This technology can monitor and give reports on the number of individuals in a space at any given time within a meeting, the ambient temperature of the room, and humidity and CO2 levels of the workspace. As workplaces continue to review the steps they are taking to facilitate safe workspaces during an ongoing pandemic, Neat Sense is helping to ensure social distancing is maintained and air quality is managed in a way that does not facilitate virus spread.

Neat Board

A complete Zoom Rooms package in a sleek all-in-one device, Neat Board offers an immersive 65-inch multi-touch screen, powerful audio system and versatile wide-angle camera. Taking the Zoom Rooms experience a step further into an immersive experience, Neat Board enables annotations and whiteboarding and comes with Neat Marker which eliminates the need to touch the screen with your fingers.

With auto-waking technology which responds to your presence when you enter the room, Neat Board allows participants to wirelessly share a screen, start a meeting, or mark something up and is perfect for taking notes, organising thoughts and providing quick visual feedback. With the ability to pair with Neat Pad as a controller, features can also be controlled from a distance.

We are happy to announce that we have successfully delivered a radiology project in partnership with the Department of Radiology at Blackpool Teaching Hospital, which will help the hospital’s radiology team continue to deliver an outstanding level of patient care and diagnostics. The streamlined radiology system will help the In-Patient Department of Radiology to facilitate the over 28,000 in-patients who pass through its general x-ray doors each year whilst increasing efficiencies to help address waiting times and improving patient experience.

Over the last year, we have consulted with Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, general X-ray team to supply a general x-ray room which can be used across a diverse patient demographic. The Shimadzu RADspeed Pro general radiographic system has provided an improved workflow for busy teams whilst also achieving dose reduction for patients.

“In addition to the streamlined workflow which the system offers that enables our team to treat more patients more effectively, the adaptability of the system means that the same technology can be used for diagnostic imaging of patients ranging from paediatrics to elderly patients,”

said Joanne Peacock, (Interim) General X-Ray Manager.

“The technology will also help our team to answer the growing demand for chest x-rays as patients dealing with prolonged ‘long-Covid’ symptoms continue to present with ongoing imaging requirements.”

The newly installed Shimadzu RADspeed pro system is our first installation of its type in England and Scotland and the first radiography project we have carried out within Blackpool Teaching Hospitals. In addition to providing a more intuitive and comfortable experience for radiographers and patients, the system also utilises image stitching software powered by Canon, where the x-ray is programmed to take several pictures and render them together into one larger x-ray image on screen for a more comprehensive view of the area being examined.

Commenting on the newly-forged relationship between HSL and Blackpool Victoria Hospital HSL CEO Dominic Walsh said,

“We are proud to have worked side by side with the Department of Radiology at Blackpool Victoria Hospital to ensure that the project delivered tangible benefits to the hospital’s radiography team and patients alike. The Shimadzu RADspeed Pro which has been installed within the Department is a truly robust and versatile piece of equipment which can be used for a wide range and high volume of patients to help improve patient through-put and streamline the workflow for the very busy radiography team.”

Patients have been given the option to see their clinicians by video consultation as the result of collaboration from two leading health technology companies. Hospital Services Limited and Savience, both exceptional in their own fields, have come together to deliver a best-in-breed video collaboration platform.

Giving patients the option to stay at home has provided a significant boost in the drive to help prevent the spread of COVID, and as a longer-term strategic solution is now delivering a practical alternative for people with mobility issues or those living in remote areas.

The innovative solution, available to hospitals and healthcare providers across the UK through the procurement route of the Patient and Healthcare Communications and Related IT Services Framework, will give clinicians and patients the option of high-quality, integrated, face-to-face video consultations without the need for expensive equipment and technology investments. Patients can access the platform via their mobile phones or tablets.

The lots secured are:

Lot 4 Patient Check-In Management System – an advanced and modular patient flow solution designed to support the challenges and demands faced by busy outpatient and ED departments as they strive to handle post COVID patient workloads. Modules include mobile check-in, online appointment booking, self-check-in kiosks, patient calling, and patient reminders.

Lot 5 App Development Services – provision to develop intuitive, patient-centric mobile applications compatible with mobile phone platforms such as iOS, Android, Kindle etc designed to foster improved patient engagement and ultimately better patient health outcomes.

Lot 7 Video Conferencing System – state-of the art, integrated video conferencing solutions for inpatients, outpatients, emergency and urgent care, administrative and other clinical services, compatible with existing communication platforms.

Proven track records

The partnership between Savience and HSL emerged from the pair working on several joint projects across Northern Ireland. Both companies have a major presence across the UK’s healthcare landscape.
Integrated with the trusts’ patient administration systems, Savience’s Clarity manages the entire patient appointment process and patient flows, while HSL delivers the video conferencing and collaboration platform.

How virtual consultations work

Once an appointment is marked as a video consultation, Clarity creates a call in the video system and an invitation SMS message is automatically sent to the patient. Clarity monitors the status of all calls being managed through the video software and updates the patient’s status accordingly.

Existing processes and working practices can remain largely unchanged. The Clarity dashboard is used by clinicians for their routine clinics, and they work through their lists by clicking on the call button as normal. But, if a patient is due for a virtual consultation, rather than calling a patient from the waiting room, clicking the video icon opens the software and initiates a virtual consult.
Patients that ‘arrive’ early, by opening the invitation on their phone, are put into a virtual waiting room until the clinician is ready to start the consultation.

Other benefits

As well as being far more cost-effective than cloud-based alternatives, the solution is secure, can fully integrate with existing systems and workflows, and is scalable across entire healthcare economies, whether that is acute, community or other.

The service has now been running in the Gestational Diabetes department in the Western Health and Social Care Trust for over a year. Commenting on the success of the solution in answering patients’ needs, Dr Athinyaa Thiraviaraj said,

“Working in partnership with women who attend our service, we have been able to develop, test, and standardise video-consultations. This has helped our service to continue with minimal interruptions through both the first and second surge of the pandemic. This innovative model of care has made it possible for us to continue our commitment to support expectant mothers at a time of anxiety and concern.”

Commenting on the special role that video calls have made in maintaining a high level of patient care Dr Thiraviaraj added,

“I can’t see our service defaulting to phone clinics. It’s just not the same when you are engaging in complex conversations like a health care consultation.”

We are happy to announce agreement with Zoom, the leading global cloud services provider for video communications and collaboration, which will enable HSL customers to deliver integrated virtual care services for clinicians and patients, as well as being a tool for administration, medical education and existing hospital-based collaboration activities.

The agreement represents the alignment of HSL, one of the UK and Ireland’s leading medical supplies, surgical equipment, consumable products and telehealth solutions distributor to the healthcare sector with the globally recognised Zoom platform to deliver an exceptional level of seamless, highly secure, and user-friendly telehealth services for a wide range of healthcare implementations.

HSL is the first and only healthcare partner with Zoom in the UK and Ireland, and this partnership will provide us with an option to expand the availability and adoption of virtual consultations through a widely known app, enabling the broadest possible range of patients and the general public to access different parts of the healthcare system.

Telehealth solutions have been widely embraced by healthcare providers and patients alike during the ongoing pandemic and this new way of providing and accessing patient care is expected to endure within the local healthcare sector post-pandemic. The team at HSL predicts that within a year, every hospital in the UK and Ireland will be using Zoom in some part of their operations, and the availability of Zoom through a healthcare partner removes the risks of investing in this technology in many more parts of healthcare development and delivery.

Discussing the exciting new partnership for HSL Dominic Walsh, CEO, said:

“The opportunity to work with Zoom to embed their services with the solutions that we have been delivering to healthcare providers across the UK and Ireland brings together the power and capacity of the world’s largest provider in this space with committed, dedicated, specialists, products and services that HSL already supplies to our customer base.”

“The addition of this service to our growing portfolio of Telehealth enabled practices and solutions empowers our customers to deliver integrated virtual health platforms as part of their Covid management plans and in a way that they will remain as part of the health service beyond this pandemic.”

Ron Emerson, Global Healthcare Lead at Zoom Video Communications added,

“We are excited by the prospect of working with Hospital Services Limited to create more uses for Zoom in healthcare in the UK and Ireland in ways that will exploit the fantastic capabilities, current and future, that Zoom provides. I know and have worked with the HSL Telehealth team for many years and understand the specialist skills and experience they provide that can help healthcare providers to embrace and use Zoom to deliver benefit to clinicians and patients alike”.

Sam McMaster, Director of Telehealth for HSL finished with,

“The option to leverage the Zoom services as part of telehealth applications and virtual healthcare platforms offered by HSL brings a new and dynamic dimension to the market for these services.”

“Zoom is the app of choice for many people and has been used extensively in Medical Education for many years. Our ability to provide Zoom as a service for our customers in health and to integrate this with the clinical workflows that drive the health service to deliver secure, private safe virtual consultations will help our customers to transform the health service.”

Specialist distributor of surgical equipment Hospital Services Limited (HSL) has supplied and installed Ireland’s-first state-of-the-art ophthalmic laser within the ophthalmology department at UPMC Kildare Hospital. The Ziemer FEMTO LDV Z8 laser will revolutionise the patient experience when it comes to laser eye surgery due to its less-invasive design and precise performance.

Whereas traditional microkeratome laser procedures use a blade to cut a flap into the cornea and allow lasers to reshape and correct the patient’s vision, the Ziemer femtosecond laser installed at UPMC Kildare Hospital offers a bladeless alternative. Using very short pulses of energy, the Ziemer laser creates tiny gas bubbles that employ the same entry incisions as the microkeratome laser procedure, without using a blade. The Ziemer laser results in clearer vision and no increase in visual complaints observed in the eyes after corneal refractive surgery, compared to the more common microkeratome procedure.

The technology will allow patients to avail of a more comfortable, individually tailored eye health experience by precisely pinpointing the locations at which it will separate the eye tissues, ensuring a custom procedure perfectly designed for each patient. To ensure the best possible surgical results, advanced patient interfaces for both cataract and corneal surgery have been developed especially for the Ziemer laser. The patient interfaces are one-piece devices with hydrogel contact lenses that are positioned within the laser to prevent corneal folds that can interfere with the introduction of the laser energy into the eye.

The highly flexible and intuitive articulated arm and the laser’s unique architecture enable for seamless integration into an ophthalmologist’s established surgical workflow. The unique design enables patients to stay in one place throughout the duration of their procedure, ensuring the highest degree of comfort for the surgeon and the patient as well as a sterile and more efficient procedure. The specially-designed laser delivers a gentler surgery as it uses very low energy, is ultrafast and is highly accurate. Patients will be left with minimal wound healing reactions and no damage to cells.

Innovation is one of HSL’s core values and ensuring patient care is the company’s main priority. This technological solution provided by HSL will help contribute to a better outcome for the large number of patients who undergo laser eye surgery each year at UPMC Kildare Hospital, resulting in superior eye health throughout Ireland.

Commenting on UPMC’s new Ziemer laser, HSL CEO Dominic Walsh said,

“We are delighted to introduce Ireland’s first Ziemer FEMTO LDV Z8 ophthalmic laser to UPMC Kildare Hospital. The only hospital on the island of Ireland to currently have access to this world-class technology, UPMC Kildare Hospital is now leading the way for eye health in Ireland. The mobile laser will ensure optimum surgical results and patient comfort, which is vital for outstanding patient care. We are looking forward to seeing the great work that comes out of the ophthalmology department over the coming months and continuing to support the team in the roll out of this fantastic technology.”

It is the Ziemer laser’s versatility that allows ophthalmologists’ demands to be met through one innovative technology. It can be used during refractive laser eye surgery, laser cataract surgery, therapeutic procedures and for surgical planning by OCT imaging.

“To have Ireland’s first Ziemer FEMTO LDV Z8 ophthalmic laser installed within UPMC Kildare Hospital is momentous for us,”

Said Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon Prof Michael O’Keefe.

“We are extremely thankful to the team at HSL for working with us over an eight-week period to install the technology and train our team on how to use the laser most efficiently and precisely. It is a huge privilege to be the first in Ireland to use the Ziemer Z8 model during vital eye surgeries, whilst being able to provide our patients with a more comfortable procedure that offers a higher chance of success.”

The Ziemer Z8 model has also been built with Lenticule Application – Corneal Lenticule Extraction for Advanced Refractive Correction (CLEAR) which is a newly developed and proprietary application intended for the treatment of Myopia (short-sightedness) and Astigmatism (uneven light focus causing blurriness). One of the key advantages of CLEAR is that cornea incisions can be crafted and positioned with a high degree of precision, thereby greatly improving the predictability, effectiveness and stability of such intricate procedures.

The mobile Ziemer FEMTO LDV Z8 model is unique, offering the highest repetition rate of any femtosecond laser. The model features overlapping laser spots that result in, complete resections free of tissue bridges, smooth stromal beds, high precision and predictability and capsule edges that are hard to distinguish from edges seen in conventional surgery.

Specialist distributor of surgical equipment Hospital Services Limited (HSL) has supplied and installed a new state-of-the-art Fujifilm ELUXEO endoscopy system at Charter Medical Private Hospital (CMPH), formerly St Francis Private Hospital, in Mullingar. Complete with Ireland’s first CAD EYE artificial intelligence (AI) technology and boasting Multi LightTM technology that ensures the imaging quality meets the highest standards in brightness and contrast, this Fujifilm ELUXEO system is a monumental move forward for Irish healthcare.

Representing an investment of €450,000, the former St Francis Private Hospital acquired and renamed by Charter Medical Group on 1st November, has teamed up with HSL to ensure their endoscopy suite features the latest endoscopy technology to identify and diagnose abnormal tissue growth within the body using both video gastro and colonoscopes.

Achieving optimal diagnostic and therapeutic results in endoscopic procedures is highly dependent on image quality. CMPH’s new Fujifilm ELUXEO endoscopic system’s high-intensity illumination creates high-quality images with White Light Imaging and the observation modes LCI (Linked Colour Imaging) and BLI (Blue Light Imaging). These light modes provide superior image quality and help to gather optimal visual information for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in daily clinical practice.

Innovation is one of HSL’s core values and ensuring customer and patient care is the company’s main priority. This technological solution provided by HSL will help contribute to a better outcome for many patients affected by colon or gastro related concerns and illnesses throughout Ireland.

Commenting on CMPH’s new endoscopy system, HSL CEO Dominic Walsh said,

We are extremely pleased to have the opportunity to partner with Charter Medical Private Hospital to install this world-class Fujifilm ELUXEO system. The highly advanced technology surpasses that of any of its counter parts in aiding abnormal lesion detection and diagnosis. CMPH’s ELUXEO system is also complete with Ireland’s first CAD EYE AI technology, meaning the endoscopy suite is like none other in the country. We are very much looking forward to see the great work that comes out of this endoscopy suite over the coming months, resulting in more patients availing of vital early diagnosis and more lives being saved.”

In addition to its ELUXEO 700 series scopes, the Fujifilm endoscopy system at the Mullingar hospital is also home to CAD EYE artificial intelligence technology. The CAD EYE system has been developed utilising AI deep learning technology and is compatible with Fujifilm’s ELUXEO endoscopy series to support endoscopic lesion detection and characterisation in the colon.

CAD EYE is aimed at improving the real time polyp detection rate, helping to recognise flat lesions and multiple polyps simultaneously, as well as any lesions at the corner of the image. Once a suspected polyp is detected by CAD EYE detection, this ground-breaking technology becomes a real-time support system for healthcare professionals acting as a second pair of eyes to accurately detect and characterise colonic polyps as cancerous or non-cancerous (hyperplastic or neoplastic).

“We are extremely happy with our new Fujifilm ELUXEO system, made possible for CMPH by HSL”

said Thomas Byrne Executive Chairman of Charter Medical Private Hospital.

“As part of Charter Medical Group’s approach in developing the treatments available to patients from CMPH, we have commenced a capital investment programme, which has begun with the installation of the Fujifilm ELUXEO endoscopy system. To have Ireland’s first CAD EYE AI system installed within our suite is a huge privilege and the ability to initiate real-time analysis of lesions and polyps is a tremendous step forward for endoscopy treatment within Ireland.”

A common concern amongst many endoscopy patients is the unpleasant nature of the procedure. However, Fujifilm’s development of the interface has been designed to enable a more comfortable experience for the patient. CAD EYE does not interfere with clinical images and minimises required eye movement. Its display is designed to be simple and intuitive for excellent support during long hours in the examination room. CAD EYE’s user friendly interface was also awarded a Good Design Award in 2019.
